Hunch Back of Notre Dame - Disabilty

Another Disney movie with a main character that has a disability is "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."  Quasimodo, the main character that has a hunchback, is portrayed as someone incapable of being loved.  He is also often made fun of by the other members in society.  His name, "Quasimodo" is derogatory in an of itself as it means "half-formed."  They call him an "unholy demon" and he was riased by a man as punishment.

This Disney movie was a children's remake of a much older adult book by Victor Hugo.  In the book, Esmeralda does end up choosing Quasimodo - yet Disney decided to change the ending and have Esmeralda choose Phoebus (the better looking, strong, non-disabled character).  Obviously many details needed to be changed to make this film into a children story (considering in the book, Quasimodo is hung).  But, what was Disney's reason for having Esmerelda choose Phoebus?
